14 Dec East Valley Rep – New Play reading
Sitting down to read a new play aloud with actors and a director for the first time is nothing short of thrilling – we mark our scripts, highlight our lines, and prepare ourselves for discovery. It is an adventure in imagining, and it is hard work. The readers are more than voices – they bring the full measure of their talent, but also all they know about life and the art of theater.
The East Valley Rep’s Artistic Director, Carlos Garcia convened a group of us to do a reading of Las Tres Chatitas, written by U.S. Poet Laureate Juan Felipe Hererra. Mr. Hererra has given Carlos permission to adapt and transform the play, and he has done a terrific job. Centered around the life of Cuca, a young Mexican woman with a beautiful voice and looks to match in 1932, the story follows her climb to the top of the local entertainment circles, and just as she is about to hit the big time…well, you are just going to have to wait till May to see what happens.
After each scene, and at the end of the play we had hearty discussions on structure, character, meaning, staging, and more.
Many thanks to the actors who participated; Laura Aurajo, Mario Estrada, Ashley Sanchez, Carlos Garcia, and yours truly.
